The Baboon: Clever and Social Survivors
Baboons (genus Papio) are among the most intelligent primates, thriving in diverse habitats from savannas to rocky hills. Known for their strong social structures, baboon troops can include over 50 members, led by dominant males. A fascinating aspect of baboon life is their problem-solving ability. In zoos, baboons are often observed using tools, such as sticks, to retrieve hidden treats or create ways to escape enclosures temporarily.
One remarkable story involves a baboon named “Jack” in 19th-century South Africa. Jack was trained to operate railway signals for his disabled owner. For nine years, Jack flawlessly performed his duties, earning the trust of railway officials and proving the incredible intelligence of baboons.
